A vigil for singer Liam Payne has been organised in Manchester after he died falling from a hotel room balcony in Argentina.

The former One Direction star tragically passed away on October 17 after falling from the third-floor balcony of his hotel in Buenos Aires.

Devoted fans of the X Factor-formed boy band, known as "Directioners," honoured the 31-year-old in a touching candle-lit vigil at the Keel Wharf Bridge at Royal Albert Dock in Liverpool on Saturday (October 19).

Details of other vigils being held this weekend have been circulating on social media, with locations including London, Birmingham, Glasgow and Manchester.

Amelia Ainscough has helped organise the Manchester gathering with a friend. The 18-year-old, who has just completed her cabin crew studies, hopes the vigil will provide a sense of closure for fans following the tragedy.

The gathering will take place at Cathedral Gardens in Manchester city centre at 6pm on Sunday (October 20). Amelia says anyone is free to attend and people are encouraged to bring candles, pictures, letters and flowers.

"I thought it would be nice to be able to gather fans together to support each other,” Amelia, who lives in Wigan, told the Manchester Evening News.

“I guess it gives everyone a sort of personal goodbye as well as a feeling of closure to what’s happened. We have had this shared all over social media and we are maybe expecting to have more than 100 people attending.”

One Direction superfan Amelia, who has loved the former boy band since she was a child, can recall the devastating moment she learned Liam had died. “I was four when I first saw them audition for The X Factor, and I'm 18 now,” she said.

“I've loved them ever since, so I have really sort of grown up with them. When he passed, I got emotional straight away. It’s not easy.

“Like a lot of other fans, there are moments of tears. Even now, a few days later, it’s still not any easier.

“I think the longer it’s been, the more emotional it is because it’s really starting to sink in - especially since everywhere we look someone is mentioning him or posting pictures. It’s like you can’t escape from the news.”
