I'm a Man United great - but I wouldn't have stayed like Ruud van Nistelrooy after Erik ten Hag sacking

Former Manchester United forward Dwight Yorke says he can't understand why Ruud van Nistelrooy accepted the interim job after Erik ten Hag's sacking on Monday.

The 48-year-old will oversee Wednesday's League Cup tie against Leicester City as United explore the possibility of appointing Sporting CP manager Ruben Amorim. As part of the reshuffling of Ten Hag's backroom staff, Van Nistelrooy returned to United as assistant manager in the summer, 18 years after leaving the club for Real Madrid.

However, Yorke says he is unsure as to why the Dutchman was happy to remain at Old Trafford following Ineos' decision to dismiss Ten Hag on Monday.

"I would have walked if I was Ruud, because I see how people will look at it," Yorke told Safest Casino Sites. "When he was appointed to Erik Ten Hag’s coaching staff, I think this was the scenario that a lot of people saw coming.

"Ruud has nothing to lose by taking the job. He’s put himself in the conversation for the role permanently by taking it on an interim basis because, let's be honest, if he wasn’t at the club, he wouldn’t be in the conversation."

Reports in the national press on Tuesday claimed that Van Nistelrooy, who won the Dutch Cup during his time at PSV Eindhoven, expects to depart United once a head coach is appointed. That process is currently well underway, with United in negotiations with Sporting CP over the release clause of Amorim.
