Erik ten Hag latest as England appoint Thomas Tuchel and Man United entertain Zinedine Zidane

by · Manchester Evening News

Manchester United have made a dismal start to the season. Erik ten Hag's side have won just three of their opening 10 matches across all competitions. They sit 14th in the Premier League and have picked up just one point from a possible six in the Europa League.

It's a start that has heaped the pressure on under-fire boss Ten Hag, who is still in charge at Old Trafford despite increasing scrutiny on his future. Although United chiefs held a seven-hour board meeting in London last Tuesday, Ten Hag has kept his job and will lead United out against Brentford on Saturday.

If United's form doesn't improve, Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Ineos could consider a change of manager, but one of those under consideration has found himself a new position. Thomas Tuchel has been appointed as the new permanent head coach of England following Gareth Southgate's exit earlier this summer.

There are a number of other candidates should United decide to part ways with Ten Hag, with Zinedine Zidane among the others in the frame. With this in mind, MEN provide the latest surrounding the managerial situation at United, including the most recent information on Ten Hag, Tuchel and Zidane.

Ten Hag latest

United refused to clarify Ten Hag's position last week and have not entertained queries about a potential managerial change. An external source suggested now-England boss Tuchel had a verbal agreement to take over at United if Ten Hag was sacked but club figures have denied that.

Ten Hag, who was under pressure in the summer after United finished eighth in the Premier League season, has a contract to run until 2026 and is set continue his role as normal following the international break.

Tuchel to England

England confirmed the arrival of Tuchel as their new head coach on Wednesday morning - eight days after the German signed his contract. The FA wanted to delay the appointment to avoid any distraction to the current camp but have now unveiled the former Chelsea boss after the two Nations League fixtures.

Tuchel has signed an 18-month deal which will run to the 2026 World Cup and will officially take charge on January 1, with Lee Carsley still taking charge of the two November matches against Greece and Republic of Ireland. It's the first permanent manager England have appointed since Southgate in 2016.

Speaking after being handed the England job, Tuchel said: "They made it clear it's about football and that got me excited. I wasn't sure this was the job for me because the schedule is very different. I always wanted to come back to England, that was my big goal.

"The offer came at the right time and we found a vision to share. Now I have to live up to it. I know there are some trophies and I want to help that happen."

Zidane latest

According to The Independent, Ineos are admirers of Zidane and United chiefs intend to keep that conversation open should there be a change to their own situation. The Frenchman has been out of work since leaving Real Madrid for a second time in May 2021 despite being linked with a return to the dugout.
