I spotted Ruud van Nistelrooy Man United moment which proves Ineos were right

by · Manchester Evening News

When Ruud van Nistelrooy arrived back at Manchester United in the summer it was met with delight from supporters but underneath the surface, we must admit that the appointment was surprising.

Van Nistelrooy was coming into the club off the back of being the head coach of PSV Eindhoven yet we were made to believe that he would be happy now being an assistant. A move to Championship club Burnley was on the table for him too which you could imagine must have been tempting considering the wonders it did for Vincent Kompany's career.

Nevertheless, the Dutchman was welcomed aboard along with Rene Hake and Andreas Georgson as the Reds had a clearout of their backroom staff. Deciding to isolate Erik ten Hag from a coaching team seemed like a rogue move but ultimately a moment during the goalless draw with Aston Villa proved why Ineos have been justified in that decision.

In a heated debate spotted during the draw, Ten Hag can be seen being challenged by Van Nistelrooy over an unknown decision. Neither man was clearly willing to back down from their stance on the situation which is exactly what Dan Ashworth would want to see from Van Nistelrooy.

Since his time in Manchester began, Ten Hag has surrounded himself with a coaching team who all believed implicitly with the same vision as him. This is all well and good when things are going well but they haven't been for some time and that is where United need someone like Van Nistelrooy on the bench to challenge the manager on his decisions.

Now you could argue after the most disappointing start to a Premier League season to date that bringing Van Nistelrooy on board is barely proving dividends. But perhaps it does help position Van Nistelrooy as an alternative to Ten Hag should the latter be fired by Ineos.

He clearly won't continue the Ten Hag status quo if he was to succeed him and perhaps some of that is what United need. The incumbent in the United dugout speaks relentlessly of sticking to the plan but the club need a disruption at this moment to turn things around and Van Nistelrooy might just be the person to lead that whether Ten Hag stays or goes.
