Rylan Clark sparks massive debate in pedestrian crossing rant as he jokes he's 'completely heartbroken'

by · Manchester Evening News

Rylan Clark has sparked a massive response to his pedestrian crossing rant as he was left joking that he's 'completely heartbroken'. It all kicked off when the TV and radio star slammed 'rude b*****ds' regarding people using zebra crossings.

Rylan's original controversial post on X, formerly known as Twitter, branded a pedestrian a 'rude p***k' for failing to express gratitude for being 'allowed' to cross.

He wrote: "I know it's the law and that pedestrians have right of way at zebra crossings... BUT SAY THANK YOU OR POP UR HAND UP. Rude p***ks... (Stuck in traffic and annoyed)."

It wasn't long before Rylan's tweet disappeared, however, he's now confirmed it wasn't intentional as he reiterated his argument and responded to some of the comments he'd received.

On Wednesday evening (October 2), the BBC Radio 2 host said: "Dunno how I deleted my tweet from earlier was looking at ur replies. Read like this 'I know it's the law and that pedestrians have right of way at zebra crossings... BUT SAY THANK YOU OR POP UR HAND UP. Rude p***ks... (Stuck in traffic and annoyed).'

"Didn’t realise would spark some massive debate. This hasn’t got anything to do with the law, who should do what, I’ve just been brought up to say thanks when a car slows down at a zebra crossing. Also, thanking a bus driver when you get off a bus. Things like that When I was on Room101 this is something I put in as my subject. As a pedestrian, I’d always thank a driver stopping so I can cross. Whether it’s my right of way or not."

He continued: "For people tweeting 'Would you as a driver thank a pedestrian for walking along the pavement and not in the road?!?' - bit different babe. 'Are you annoyed they didn’t recognise you'- completely heartbroken. Just manners. Enjoy your day. Look both ways."

And the comments quickly started again. @tomlee80 said: "I agree. raise a hand and acknowledge. It's not hard. Doesn't take much. I fear in the internet/smart phone/self service checkout era people have become more socially inept. Not good or healthy." @ourrachblogs commented: "I don’t drive but I always say thanks when walking across a zebra crossing - just thought it was the polite thing to do!"

But @jonesgarethp argued: "Ah, I see Rylan is jeopardising his National Treasure status by having a go at the zebra crossing community. I'm sorry, but this topic isn't as black & white as you might think." @lordofanywhere posted: "I love Rylan, but I will take my time at a zebra crossing, and will shout at any driver that doesn’t respect my RIGHT OF WAY." @caffyhank added: "I actually hate it when people thank me at zebra crossings I feel proper sly on them like why you saying thanks I’m supposed to stop for you, it’s like me thanking the traffic light for turning green."
