M6 crash: Everything police said after two children among five killed on motorway

Police have issued an appeal for witnesses to come forward after five people were killed in a horrific crash on the M6.

Emergency crews were called to the scene of the two-car smash on northbound stretch of the motorway past Tebay Services at around 4.04pm yesterday (Tuesday, October 15). Cumbria Police said five people tragically died on the scene.

These were a man, the driver of a Toyota, a woman and two children in the same car - all from Glasgow. The driver of a Skoda, a man from Cambridgeshire, also died.

A third child was taken to hospital with serious injuries. As the incident unfolded yesterday, the motorway was fully closed off as emergency crews responded.

Cumbria Police said yesterday: "Police are currently responding to a serious collision on the M6. The M6 Northbound is closed from J36 to J39.

"Officers were called to the incident at 4:04pm today (Oct 15). The road may be closed for some time, drivers are asked to seek alternative routes."

In full, the force's statement this morning said: "Police are appealing for witnesses to a fatal collision on the M6 Northbound past Tebay Services. Officers were called to the incident at 4:04pm yesterday (Oct 15).

"The collision involved two vehicles – a Skoda and a Toyota. The driver of the Skoda, a man from Cambridgeshire was pronounced deceased at the scene.

"The driver of the Toyota, a man, a woman and two children from Glasgow were also pronounced deceased at the scene. A third child in the Toyota was taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle with serious injuries.

"The families of those involved are being supported by specially trained officers. The M6 Northbound full reopened in the early hours of this morning.
