Shock new name on Erik ten Hag replacement shortlist as Man United narrow succession plan

by · Manchester Evening News

Manchester United have put Edin Terzic on their shortlist to replace Erik ten Hag. The 41-year-old has been out of work since guiding Borussia Dortmund to the Champions League final last season.

Terzic started his coaching career at Dortmund alongside Jurgen Klopp, before becoming an assistant manager to Slaven Bilic during his time with Besiktas and West Ham. The German returned to Dortmund in 2018 and spent a further six years at the club in a number of different capacities, including as a technical director and coach.

Having spent six months in charge on an interim basis in the 2020/21 season, Terzic got the top job permanently in May 2022. He almost guided Dortmund to the Bundesliga title in his first campaign, losing out on the final day to Bayern Munich. Terzic quit Dortmund in June, having won 83 of his 124 matches at the helm.

Now, less than five months following his exit from Dortmund, Terzic is on the shortlist to become the next United manager if Ten Hag is given the axe, according to The Sun. Terzic, who did his coaching badges with former United duo Nemanja Matic and Nicky Butt, is a contender to replace the under-fire Dutchman.

It's reported that United are currently reviewing Ten Hag's position after their dismal start to the season. They have looked at Graham Potter, Gareth Southgate and Thomas Tuchel. There is also the option of promoting No.2 and Ten Hag's assistant Ruud van Nistelrooy, who has previous managerial experience with PSV.

United have won just three of their first 10 matches this season. They started the season with a 1-0 win at home to Fulham but followed that up with back-to-back defeats against Brighton and Liverpool. Successive victories over Southampton and Barnsley looked to have restored the feel-good factor, but United have since failed to win any of their last five, including recent draws at Porto and Aston Villa.

Club chiefs held a seven-hour meeting in London on Tuesday, with Ten Hag's future a key talking point. Despite this, the former Ajax boss is confident he will still be in charge for Saturday's visit of Brentford but there has been no confirmation from the club yet.
