Christopher Nolan to team up with A-list actor for next blockbuster

by · Manchester Evening News

Christopher Nolan's upcoming film is set to hit cinemas in the summer of 2026, with a high-profile actor reportedly in discussions to take the lead role.

The director's most recent blockbuster, Oppenheimer, distributed by Universal Pictures, bagged seven Oscar awards. Now, information about his next venture has emerged, according to Deadline, with Universal Pictures once again taking charge.

Scheduled for an IMAX release on 17 July 2026, the plot details remain under wraps, but it appears a leading man is already in negotiations. Specifically, Matt Damon, who was part of the star-studded cast in Oppenheimer and had previously collaborated with Nolan on the science fiction drama, Interstellar.

While most specifics are still confidential, Deadline reports that filming will commence in early 2025.

Prior to Oppenheimer, Nolan had a long-standing relationship with Warner Bros. However, in 2020, he publicly criticised the studio's decision to simultaneously release its 2021 film slate on HBO Max and in cinemas, reports the Mirror.

He subsequently signed with Universal, ending their nearly two-decade partnership. Nolan has since spoken about his departure from Warner Bros. ,telling Variety in 2023: "It's water under the bridge."

Matt Damon is also no stranger to the Oscars stage. In 1998, he clinched the Best Screenplay award for Good Will Hunting alongside his co-writer and friend Ben Affleck. Damon has also been nominated twice for the esteemed Best Actor category: for The Martian in 2016 and Good Will Hunting in 1998.

Reports of Nolan's next cinematic venture have sparked major excitement on X, previously referred to as Twitter. Fans are buzzing with anticipation, one fan humorously posted: "I don't need to see a trailer for the movie. Just give us the release date, and everyone will show up regardless."

Another echoed the sentiment, commenting, "Whatever it is, sign me up." A third enthusiast contributed to the hype, anticipating further accolades for the director: "Let's get the next Nolan Oscar campaign going babyyyy."

Universal has yet to confirm these reports.
