Locals react to Trump return
by Brayden Ursel · CastanetThe 2024 US election has come to a close with Republican Donald Trump set to become the 47th President of the United States of America.
Trump beat Democrat and vice president Kamala Harris, so Castanet hit the streets of Kelowna to get reaction from residents.
"Nobody saw this coming, I don't think. Everybody was saying it was going to be a tight race but he got a grand slam and it just keeps coming and coming," said one man.
Another woman added, "I'm very disheartened and I'm afraid the US got the President, I guess, they deserve. I'm really surprised... They wanted Trump and they got Trump."
While many were upset with the final result, others in Kelowna were happy to see Trump's return.
"I think Donald Trump is a good person. It's much better for America, and I think Canada too," said one woman downtown on Bernard Ave.
One man, who has a brother living in Colorado, said he's interested to see Trump follow through with his goals and ideas as President through 2028.
"I'm so excited and I cannot believe he won. I was watching the results on Google and I couldn't believe how fast the red bar was moving up. I'm pretty excited," he said.
Some Kelowna residents were concerned to see what happens with possible tariffs on Canadian imports to the United States. Others were interested to see how this impacts the war between Russia and Ukraine.
Joe Biden and vice president Harris will remain in office until Jan. 20, 2025, when Donald Trump is set to be sworn in.
