Disney recently revealed that it was finally returning to adding Dolby Vision HDR masters to (at least most of) its future 4K Blu-ray releases, starting with Deadpool & Wolverine. And now it’s given us a good indication of just how wide-ranging this new Dolby Vision support is likely to be by confirming that Dolby’s premium HDR format is going to be available on its next batch of Star Wars and Marvel TV show 4K Blu-ray releases.

Four new Star Wars/Marvel Disney+ shows have been announced for the 4K Blu-ray treatment: Season three of The Mandalorian, season one of Ahsoka, season one of Hawkeye, and season two of Loki. As is now customary with these Disney+ prestige 4K Blu-ray releases, all four titles will only be available in Steelbook collector’s editions, featuring exclusive artwork by popular artist Attila Szarka, collectors cards and new bonus features. And all four are confirmed to be getting Dolby Vision masters on top of the core HDR10 masters that were the only option available on all of Disney’s previous Disney+ TV show 4K BD releases.

Dolby Vision, if you’re not familiar with it, adds extra scene by scene data to the image stream that compatible 4K Blu-ray players and TVs can use to deliver more accurate and, usually, more dynamic-looking HDR pictures. It’s a hugely popular feature with AV fans, but one that Disney had stopped supporting (for much speculated on but never truly confirmed reasons) on 4K Blu-ray since its release of Star Wars: The Last Jedi way back in 2018. Despite Dolby Vision masters being routinely available—including for the four shows we’re talking about here—on the Disney+ streaming platform.

Each of the new Star Wars/Marvel Studios’ TV show 4K Blu-ray releases will be spread across two 100GB-capacity discs. This is as we’d expect to see, and it’s a relief to find that Disney hasn’t stuck with the 66GB discs it typically uses for its film 4K Blu-rays. With total running times of 339 minutes, 356 minutes, 279 minutes and 297 minutes for The Mandalorian S3, Ahsoka S1, Hawkeye S1 and Loki S2 respectively, though, it might have been nice if the mastering has spread to a third disc. Hopefully the new 4K Blu-ray mastering arrangement with Sony will ensure that none of these titles end up looking overly compressed.

The new Dolby Vision support isn’t the only Dolby feature you can expect to get on Disney’s latest batch of Star Wars and Marvel Studios TV series 4K BD releases. Disney has confirmed that all four will also be accompanied by Dolby Atmos soundtracks.
