Beetlejuice Beetlejuice—Tim Burton, Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder and Jenna Ortega’s blockbuster hit—debuts on digital streaming this week.

The sequel to the 1988 supernatural comedy classic Beetlejuice opened in theaters on September 6. Beetlejuice Beetlejuice picks up 36 years after the original, as Lydia Deetz (Ryder) and her stepmother, Delia (Catherine O’Hara), return to Winter River, Connecticut, for the funeral of Lydia’s dad and Delia’s husband Charles.

Accompanying the Deetzes are Lydia’s daughter, Astrid (Ortega) and Lydia’s boyfriend, Rory (Justin Theroux). When one of them haphazardly says “Beetlejuice” three times, it opens a portal to the Afterlife and Beetlejuice returns. This time around, however, Lydia needs help from “The Ghost with the Most” when Astrid finds herself in a major predicament.

Directed by Burton from a screenplay by Wednesday scribes Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice also stars Monica Bellucci as Beetlejuice’s ex-wife, Delores. The movie also stars Willem Dafoe as Wolf Jackson—a deceased actor who puts his previous roles as a detective to good use in the Afterlife.

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice will be available on digital streaming via premium video on demand on Tuesday. Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is currently up for pre-order on several digital platforms including Prime Video, AppleTV+ and VUDU for $24.99, which is the film’s purchase price.

Typically, PVOD rental prices are $5 less, so viewers can expect to rent Beetlejuice Beetlejuice for $19.99 for a 48-hour period that begins when the movie is started.

Burton Gave Millar And Gough A ‘Clean Slate’ When Writing The Script

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, of course, went through decades of developmental hell before Tim Burton asked Wednesday creators Alfred Gough and Miles Millar to write a script while they were collaborating on the first season of the hit Netflix series.

The biggest advantage in the creation of the Beetlejuice Beetlejuice screenplay, the scribes said in a Zoom interview before the release of the film in theaters, was that Burton told the duo to ignore any of the ideas from previous drafts for the sequel.

“Tim told us, ‘Don't read any other drafts. I want this to be a clean slate, and I want you guys to go and create a fresh story,’ That's where we started it from,” Millar said. “So, we had a clean palette to go off and do whatever we wanted, and I think that was something that was very liberating for him and for us, because we were unimpeded from any previous iterations or the 30-plus years of development.”

From there, Gough added, all the pieces for the Beetlejuice sequel finally fell into place.

“When we got his ideas of what he wanted, we went off and crafted a story, came back and pitched it to him, and he liked it. Then we did an outline,” Gough said. “As movies go, it happened very quickly.”

Audiences quickly responded in a positive way to Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, as the film burned up the box office with a $110 million take in its opening weekend in North American theaters. To date, per The Numbers, the film has earned $257.6 million domestically and $123.8 million internationally for a worldwide tally of $381.6 million.

Rotten Tomatoes critics also embraced Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, giving the film a 78% “fresh” rating based on 344 reviews. RT users, meanwhile, gave Beetlejuice Beetlejuice an 80% “fresh” Audience Score based on 10,000-plus verified ratings.

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is still playing in theaters and debuts on PVOD Tuesday.
