Slow Horses is one of the best shows on TV, continuing Apple’s wild success with high-quality, underrated series and giving fans of spy thrillers some of the best-acted, best-written and best-edited stories out there. I love this show, and Season 4 somehow managed to be the best season so far. (Read my season 4 finale review here. It was the best episode of the show so far, also).

The good news keeps pouring in when it comes to Slow Horses. Season 5 is already finished and likely isn’t too far away. Now we’ve learned that Season 6 has been officially renewed by Apple.

“Audiences around the world have fallen in love with the Slow Horses, and I’m delighted that Gary Oldman will be leading this star-studded cast on another acerbic and action-packed adventure,” Jay Hunt, creative director for Apple TV+ in Europe, said in a statement.

Slow Horses is based on the novels by Mick Herron and follows the misadventures of a team of spies at MI5’s Slough House, a sort of halfway house for spies deemed unworthy of working at MI5 HQ, yet who manage to solve some of the most dire cases the British spy agency faces. It’s a story about outcasts and underdogs who prove their mettle time and time again.

Led by the foul-mouthed and fouler-smelling Jackson Lamb (Gary Oldman), the team of rejects consists of River Cartwright (Jack Lowden), Roddy Ho (Christopher Chung), Louisa Guy (Rosalind Eleazar) and Catherine Standish (Saskia Reeves) among others including newcomer, J.K. Coe (Thomas Brooke). Kristin Scott Thomas stars as MI5 Second Desk, Diana Taverner, who will once again play a key role in the coming seasons. Season 4 director Adam Randall is also returning.

So far, every single season of Slow Horses boasts a 100% “Fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and that rating is well-deserved. There’s not a single bad episode in its 24-episode run.

The sixth season “sees the Slow Horses on the run as Diana Taverner embroils them all in a fatally high-stakes game of retaliation and revenge” according to Apple’s press release.

Showrunner Will Smith has also revealed that Gary Oldman has basically signed on to the show for life. “I mean, all I could say is I know that Gary has expressed a desire to play Lamb forever and that Mick [Herron] is still writing the books, so I hope it will go for as long as people want it.”

Slow Horses joins other great Apple TV series such as Severance, Silo (the new trailer just dropped for Season 2!), Bad Monkey, Sunny and lots more, making it my current favorite in the myriad streaming services we have to juggle these days. There is currently no release date for Season 6, but if the cadence holds steady it shouldn’t be much further than a year out.
