Kylie Minogue has been in the business of getting people dancing for decades, and the 2020s in particular have been filled with upbeat offerings from the Aussie superstar designed to get folks moving. She released her smash Disco album in 2020 and electropop album Tension last year, the latter bolstered by the success of its hit lead single “Padam Padam.” But Minogue isn’t done with Tension just yet.

Tension’s follow-up album, Tension II, is out now and serves as an extension of the sonic universe Minogue invited listeners into last year. The album is packed with dance-pop outings of various tempos designed for any kind of party, from “Kiss Bang Bang” and lead single “Lights Camera Action” to “Taboo” and “Shoulda Left Ya.”

It’s a project that even Minogue herself wasn’t sure about releasing given she’s never released a sequel album in her more than three decades in music. “[Releasing Tension II] wasn’t the intention,” she told Vogue of the process. “I wish we had this great idea when we were making Tension: ‘Hey, we have enough, let’s save it for Tension II.’ We started to head down that road, but because of the success with ‘Padam Padam,’ more and more songs are being sent to me than perhaps the year before.”

“[Eventually] I remember calling my A&R in Australia and saying, ‘This is starting to feel like another body of work,’” she recounted. “I never thought of doing a part two of any album before, but what we were working on definitely wasn’t the next album. The next album will be the next thing. But I feel like we’ve gone from 16:9 ratio to Panavision; it’s broadened the world of Tension. And now, with a new tour, there’s definitely still a lot of excitement for this current era.”
