Khamzat Chimaev reminded the entire combat universe of his dominant skillset earlier today (Sat., Oct. 26, 2024) at UFC 308 live on ESPN+ pay-per-view (PPV) from inside Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi, UAE, demolishing former UFC middleweight champion Robert Whittaker with a vicious first-round submission (face crank).

Chimaev was originally scheduled to fight Whittaker in Saudi Arabia earlier this year, but serious health issues prevented “Borz” from making his Octagon return. Instead, his matchup with Whittaker was re-booked for this weekend in Abu Dhabi. Given Chimaev’s past weight cut issues and hospitalizations, fight fans weren’t really sure what to expect when he clashed with Whittaker.

To some surprise, Chimaev absolutely steamrolled Whittaker from the opening bell. It took less than 10 seconds for Khamzat to shoot in and drag Whittaker to the canvas. Whittaker tried to defend and get back to his feet, but every time he got a post or looked to be getting up Chimaev dragged him back down. It was complete dominance.

Eventually, Chimaev positioned himself to snap in a tight rear-naked choke. But before he locked it in under the chin Whittaker tapped and the fight was waved off. After the fight it was revealed that Khamzat’s pressure around the chin dislocated Whittaker’s jaw, resulting in the face crank finish. It was pretty violent and a great way for Chimaev to skip the line at 185 pounds and fight for the title next.
