A terrorist was killed in an encounter with security forces in Jammu and Kashmir's Kathua on Sunday. Head Constable Bashir Ahmed also lost his life in the exchange of fire, while two personnel were injured, a senior office said, as a massive search operation is underway in the area for the second day.

A post by Western Command, Indian Army stated, "Operation #OpKUAIG launched by #RisingStarCorps & @JmukmrPolice on 28 Sep 24 in general area #Dhanuparole, #Machhedi #Kathua. One terrorist killed & warlike stores recovered, operation still in progress."

Additional Director General of Police, Jammu, Anand Jain said the forces got the information about the presence of the terrorists on Saturday. "After that, an operation was launched with the security forces...Head constable Bashir Ahmed has lost his life in the exchange of fire. Two other personnel have been injured and they are stable...The information was that there were 3-4 terrorists present in this area. Search operations are underway," he told reporters.

The police officer said the operations against terrorists are going on and will continue. "We are getting continuous information about terrorists and subsequently conducting operations with an endeavour to neutralise them as soon as possible," he said.

Jain added that sufficient security measures are in place to guarantee that there are no terror-related incidents and that the third phase of assembly elections is free of violence. In addition to Kathua, the third phase includes the districts of Jammu, Udhampur, and Samba in the Jammu area, as well as Baramulla, Kupwara, and Bandipora in north Kashmir.

Jammu and Kashmir DGP RR Swain condoled the death of Constable Bashir Ahmad in the action. "While the J&K police force cannot bring back HC Bashir, it undertakes to extend every possible support to the family and avenge the martyrdom of the courageous Bashir who did not fear even death when it came to protecting his community and his countrymen gave hell to the foreign terrorists with his LMG before succumbing to his injuries," he said.
