George Baldock was found dead in a swimming pool in Greece after his wife raised the alarm from the UK, according to local reports.

The 31-year-old former Premier League footballer was tragically found dead on Wednesday, October 9. Baldock, who was a Greek international, moved to Panathinaikos in the summer and was living in Glyfada, a suburb south of Athens.

He was reportedly found in the communal pool after the owner of his villa searched the property. The response unit believed he was in the water for several hours, according to images they had seen.

Local reports have suggested that Baldock's wife raised the alarm from England after she was unable to contact him for several hours.

A statement from his heartbroken family reads: "We can confirm that George has sadly passed away. As a family we are in shock at this terrible loss. We ask please that the media respect our privacy at this time."

The defender most recently played for Greek giants Panathinaikos after having spent seven years with the Blades between 2017 and 2024 and previously also representing MK Dons, Northampton and Oxford.

Baldock, who was reportedly a target for Celtic back in 2021, qualified to play for Greece through his grandmother and made 12 appearances for the national team. Greece are scheduled to meet England at Wembley Stadium on Thursday night, though Baldock was left out of the squad due to injury.

Following the devastating news, Panathinaikos darkened down their Instagram and X profile pictures. A statement from the Greek Super League read: "The entire Super League football family expresses its deep sorrow for the untimely loss of Panathinaikos and our national team footballer, George Baldock, and extends its deepest condolences to his family and loved ones.”
