Chancellor Rachel Reeves has thrown a lifeline to motorists by extending the freeze on fuel duty. She said prices will be controlled to help drivers in the cost of living crisis:
She said increasing the tax would be the "wrong choice" and added: "No higher taxes at the petrol pump next year."
However, the move is likely to be criticised by green groups fearful about the impact on the environment.
It came as Reeves announced £40bn of taxes in order to balance the books.
She said rises in taxes like national insurance for employers are necessary to get the country back on track.
Reeves is the first female Chancellor and her Budget was the first Labour tax and spending statement since 2010.
Many of the tax rises were leaked in advance Reeves earned a rebuke from the Speaker in the House of Commons for talking about the Budget in advance.
