'Secret code' on Netflix unlocks all horror films – just in time for Halloween

A Netflix lover has revealed a clever way to bring up the platform’s entire roster of horror films and thrillers just in time for Halloween.

Spooky season is upon us and that means it’s time to get stuck into some scary films. There's something for everyone this season, and even if gore isn't your cup of tea, it's a great opportunity to get stuck into a psychological thriller or even a seasonal animated film.

There’s nothing better than curling up on the sofa with plenty of snacks and being scared silly in October – and now, it's easier than ever.

Keen to ensure people are able to make the most of the season, one clever and helpful person shared a very simple and easy hack to guarantee you’re able to access every horror Netflix has to offer.

On Reddit, they shared: “Just type 8711 in the search bar and it will bring up all things horror (and one or two weirdly not). These are all the horror themed films and shows without an algorithm applied. Enjoy and happy spooky season.”

The tip garnered a lot of attention, gaining almost 10,000 likes in just 24 hours. Hundreds of Reddit users shared their thoughts and appreciation in the comments section. One person said: “Whoa! I had no idea this was a thing. Thanks for sharing”, while someone else offered a code of their own: “42023 brings up all the supernatural horror, if that's your jam!”

A fourth Netflix user commented: “Oh, wow! I believe I am going to try... "The Devil All the Time" So fun! Great list! Thanks, OP [original poster]!” And another quipped: “Doing the (dark) lord’s work! Thanks”.

But one person lamented: “It drives me insane that some streaming services don't just list everything they have in alphabetical order. Whyyy.” To which, another theorised: “IIRC [if I recall/remember correctly] it's to prevent you being able to see everything they have. They don't want the average user to know just how big/small the library is.”

Agreeing, another person replied: “Categorisation DOES allow them to make it seem like they have a larger library. If they list all movies by name, every movie can appear only once. Meanwhile, with categories, they can put the same movie in Your Next Watch, New to Netflix, Popular in Your Area, Because You Watched 'X', Award Winning Movies, Sci-fi, Horror, and more all at the same time.”

One person, who tried the code for themselves, added comically: “I just used this and ‘Save the Last Dance’ was included. Someone at Netflix HQ is afraid of love.”
