Keir Starmer has urged both of the candidates vying to become the next US President to accept the result of the election. The Labour Prime Minister issued his call amid fears President Trump will go to the courts if Vice President Harris wins.

Trump has consistently refused to accept he lost to President Biden in 2020 after making baseless claims of voter fraud. The Republican has ramped up the same claims in the contest against Harris by suggesting “cheating” has been going on.

Starmer, who has refused to say who he wants to win, was asked by the Record if he believes both candidates should accept the result.

He replied: “Yes, I do. But, look, we will work with whoever the American people elect as their president. The relationship between the UK and the US sits above any of the holders of the particular offices.”

Labour sources are desperate for Harris, a Democrat, to beat Trump in the photo-finish election. The Trump campaign made a formal complaint after Labour members travelled to the US to campaign for the VP.

Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar and First Minister John Swinney have backed Harris, as has Scottish Lib Dem leader Alex Cole-Hamilton who campaigned for her during a break from Holyrood. The tight contest will likely be determined by whoever wins seven US swing states.
