Liam Payne said he 'didn't have many friends he could trust' in texts to Paddy McGuinness

TV personality Paddy McGuinness has shared some heartbreaking text messages between himself and pal Liam Payne about his sobriety before his tragic death in Argentina this week

Liam Payne achieved sobriety last year after a 100-day stint in rehab but it appears he may have returned to a destructive relationship with alcohol and drugs prior to his heartbreaking death on Wednesday, October 16.

Police are said to have been called to reports at the hotel of a "man acting aggressively at the hotel who could be under the effect of drink or drugs". It's believed that Liam fell from around 13 or 14 metres and suffered "very serious injuries incompatible with life." Police say the music star’s hotel room had been "in complete disarray" with "various items broken". A whiskey bottle, lighter and mobile phone had been retrieved from the internal hotel courtyard where Liam’s body was found.

The ex-One Direction singer tragically met his end in Buenos Aires, Argentina, falling from the third floor of his hotel after a holiday with his girlfriend, Kate Cassidy. The head of reception at Hotel Casa Sur made two desperate 911 calls, pleading for "someone to come" after revealing that a guest was "off his head on drugs and is destroying everything in his room".

Liam, who soared to fame with the mega-band, shared a son, Bear, aged seven, with songstress Cheryl. They went separate ways in 2018 after two and a half years and having welcomed Bear into the world a year prior. On October 18 Cheryl released an emotional statement, highlighting the impact Liam's death will have on their son.

She said: "As I try to navigate this earth shattering event, and work through my own grief at this indescribably painful time, I'd like to kindly remind everyone that we have lost a human being. Liam was not only a pop star and celebrity, he was a son, a brother, an uncle, a dear friend and a father to our 7 year old son. A son that now has to face the reality of never seeing his father again."

The devastated singer added: "What is troubling my spirit the most is that one day Bear will have access to the abhorrent reports and media exploitation we have seen in the past two days. It is breaking my heart further that I cannot protect him from that in his future.

"I am begging you to consider what use some of these reports are serving, other than to cause further harm to everyone left behind picking up the pieces. Before you leave comments or make videos, ask yourself if you would like your own child or family to read them. Please give Liam the little dignity he has left in the wake of his death to rest in some peace at last. Thank you, Cheryl."

Paddy McGuinness has now come forward to share text messages he exchanged with the former X Factor star about his struggles with sobriety. He revealed that Liam found it difficult to trust people as he adjusted to life after the global success of One Direction.

One message read: "I don't have many mates I can trust who know how I feel and since being sober I'm wanting to branch out more instead of hiding away."

This follows a previous admission from Liam that he felt isolated while touring the world as part of a boy band, often confined to his hotel due to the throngs of fans outside. This left him alone with his thoughts and often led him to the minibar for a "party of one".

Comedian Paddy shared these texts on an Instagram story today as he paid tribute to the late star. "I really enjoyed the small amount of time I got to hang out with Liam. His messages were always open and honest," he reflected, reports the Express.

Liam was just 31 when he tragically fell from a third-floor balcony at his hotel in Buenos Aires. He had been in the Argentinian capital to celebrate One Direction bandmate Niall Horan's solo show on October 2, and had stayed on with his girlfriend afterwards. However, she'd returned to Florida earlier this week, explaining later that she didn't like to spend too much time in one place.

Liam was reportedly due to check out of the hotel, in the Palermo district, on the day of his death. It is believed that he received an unwelcome email, which caused him signs of distress in the lobby.

Liam then allegedly smashed his laptop, as well as the television in his room. Police and emergency services surrounded the hotel as his death was announced, with it being stated that his injuries were too severe for resuscitation attempts.
