Linking to the past

It's finally here, folks! We've reached the launch week of The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom (it launches tomorrow, in fact) and it's time to see the results of the very first review courtesy of Famitsu.

Shared by Ryokutya2089 (via Gematsu), the Japanese publication awarded the Zelda-led adventure a 35/40, with a 10/9/8/8 critic split.

Not too shabby, eh? As a reminder, Famitsu gave Link's last adventure, Tears of the Kingdom, a perfect 40/40, while the Switch remaster of Link's Awakening (to which EoW appears to share a lot of DNA) got an identical 35/40.

And Echoes of Wisdom wasn't the only Switch game to pop up in Famitsu this week. Disney Epic Mickey: Rebrushed landed 31/40 (8/8/8/7), NBA 2K25 scored 33/40 (9/8/8/8), No Case Should Remain Unsolved got 33/40 (8/9/8/8) and Pico Park 2 received 34/40 (9/8/8/9).

Keep an eye out for our full review of The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom, which will be available soon enough. In the meantime, you can take a look at our hands-on preview below.

I'm off work for a few days so looking forward to getting lost in this game on the sofa with cups of tea

Now all we need is a remake of Link to the Past, Between Worlds and the Oracles, in this style, and we have a nice set going on, right?

Or are they not part of the same storyline?

@Daniel36 No mention of Tri-force Heroes? It's not complete without it.

Can't wait for my physical copy to arrive, as soon as it does I'm absolutely starting playing it!

Undecided when I will get this one. 70% chance it’s 2 or more years before I play it. Smaller chance I get it soon or within a year.

I'm very ready to play it this weekend!

If it's as good as LA, then I'll enjoy the heck out of it for sure.

Picking it up tomorrow morning. Took half days off tomorrow and Friday. The past month has been all work and no play, so I can use the break.

Yeah, but this is not a Zelda game, it's a ....Zelda....game xD

I am REALLY looking forward to playing a Zelda game outside of the boring (but amazin?!) BoTW/Tears style.

I wish LoZ games could in multiple directions with different teams giving it their own spin without Aunoma involved at all.

Oof, Famitsu tend to overrate, especially Zelda games. I'm really not sure about this. I'll put it on my Christmas list, but I've not been super impressed by what I've seen so far. Just seems like lots of menus, like in Tears of the Kingdom.

You might want to check that Ryokutya2089 link again. It appears to show a 10/9/9/8 critic split and a 36/40 score, not a 35/40 score.

Gonna finish A Link Between Worlds first, then I'll snatch this one up as soon as I can get it for 50 euros, or less.

@McBurn And now everyone will call Zelda .. Link lol .. finally his name gets his time in the spotlight

@Rees sounds like the perfect afternoon!

@McBurn The Legend of Link: A Zelda to the Past

@JohnnyMind Same here! The wait is killing me

@RainbowGazelle NL tends to do the same. Nintendolife is the Famitsu of the west when comes to Zelda games. Just saying if Famitsu overrates Zelda, then NL overrates it too.

@msvt boring? that speaks more of you than the game. Do you need life to be a constant amusement park to not be bored?

@ChakraStomps No, he's right though; They've been using this ''big open world with lots of menus'' style a little too much now; I, too, would love to see the franchise (especially the 3D ones), return to a more linear structure with a better memorable story.

I still fondly remember Midna from Twilight Princess, for exemple, or the badass fight against Bongo Bongo in Ocarina of Time... Whereas I barely remember who I fought in BotW and TotK

@RainbowGazelle how are you playing Tears of the Kingdom where you think it is all menus? Dont use bow and arrows so much. Game will flow better.

@naxuu this is correct

@Maubari the story is what you make it.. I guess some players dont have an inner spark to create memerable moments.

@ChakraStomps Yeah probably. But that's also why the newer Zelda's just don't appeal to everyone - unlike the older ones. Damn shame, but it happens. The original games are fun little adventures - BotW and TotK are just generic open world games that use the Zelda title - and because of its title, it still sells millions... somehow. There's nothing the newer Zelda's do that older open world games like Skyrim or even Witcher 3 have done before - and (much) better too.

@Daniel36

With the broken framerate of that janky engine?

No ta.

Pretty good score. I’ll be getting this later this year I think. Can’t wait to read the full review though and see what’s really going on!

@ChakraStomps
I also said amazing.
But yes it also felt like a chore, and I am glad you liked it.

I hope it's just a coincidence that LA got the same score. I was so disappointed by that remake. EW gives me a much better vibe so far. I do really hope that they worked a bit harder on the music this time though.

@Rees There better be some biscuits or cake involved to soak up some of that tea.

Will drop all the other games I'm juggling to pick this up and play it. It's a brand new top-down mainline Zelda, I'm not waiting.

I'm really enjoying Yars Rising right now. And UFO 50. And Castlevania Order of Ecclesia. And Astro Bot! (for this we are passing the controller around, so we might continue this one while also playing Zelda).

@RainbowGazelle When was Tears of the Kingdom about menus? If the quick inventory was that bad for you, you'd hate any RPG. Lol

Also they rate most Zelda games just fine.

@Maubari

No they haven't. We've only had two open world Zelda games and the menus aren't even comparable to an RPG. I'm not sure how anyone could spend a lot of time in the limited menus of BoTW or ToTK.

On the otherhand, we've had numerous top down Zelda games. Nintendo has spent 30 years doing them lol.

@Maubari I understand the sentiment, but BotW was the first Zelda in a looooooong time that gave me the right feels. To me it felt like a re-imaging of Zelda II, which was my first Zelda and one I fondly remember.

TotK was too over the top for me though, didn't even bother.

But before that, the last Zelda to truly captivate me was probably the SNES one. So honestly only Zelda II and III. I guess I liked the original Link's Awakening too, but never finished it. So I guess I really did enjoy BotW, otherwise I wouldn't have played it to the end.

@Enigk goes without saying!

so i guess not a candidate for goty..

UFO 50 is a shoe-in for my GOTY. I don't see how anything can top that. Hopefully it comes to Switch / Switch 2 soon enough...

Damnnn 10/10. My butthole stanks but I'ma play this the next 36 hours. Strapping on the diaper RN
