Liam Payne's father, Geoff Payne, has paid a heartfelt tribute to his son at the hotel where the singer met with tragedy. The late One Direction star's father was seen amidst a crowd of mourners gathered to honour his memory.

It is believed that Liam suffered a fall from a height of approximately 13 or 14 metres, resulting in "very serious injuries incompatible with life".

Police have described the state of the music star's hotel room as being "in complete disarray" with "various items broken". A frantic call to emergency services from hotel staff requested 'urgent' assistance shortly before his passing, reports the Mirror.

Geoff and Karen Payne reportedly left their Wolverhampton home "in a hurry" close to midnight upon receiving the devastating news of Liam's death. In the wake of this tragedy, Liam's family issued a statement saying: "We are heartbroken. Liam will forever live in our hearts and we'll remember him for his kind, funny and brave soul. We are supporting each other the best we can as a family and ask for privacy and space at this awful time."

One Direction members Louis Tomlinson, Zayn Malik, Niall Horan and Harry Styles have released a joint statement expressing their devastation over the death of bandmate Liam Payne. The statement read: "We're completely devastated by the news of Liam's passing. In time, and when everyone is able to, there will be more to say. But for now, we will take some time to grieve and process the loss of our brother, who we loved dearly."

They added: "The memories we shared with him will be treasured forever. For now, our thoughts are with his family, his friends, and the fans who loved him alongside us. We will miss him terribly. We love you Liam."

Cheryl Tweedy, Liam's ex-girlfriend and mother to their seven year old son Bear, also expressed her sorrow.

She voiced her concern about the potential future impact on their son of media exploitation surrounding his father's death. This follows the controversial decision by American gossip site TMZ to publish images of Liam's body after his fall, a move that was widely condemned as "sick".

Cheryl stated: "What is troubling my spirit the most is that one day Bear will have access to the abhorrent reports and media exploitation we have seen in the past two days."
