We’re jumping full steam into awards season with the nominees for the 67th Grammy Awards. For everyone who said the great rap beef of 2024 would hurt hip-hop, Kendrick Lamar would like a word. He garnered seven nods, with his “Not Like Us” up for both Record and Song of the Year. Just in case you’re wondering, the Grammys are not taking sides by not nominating Drake. The “Certified Lover Boy” didn’t submit music for this year’s show.

While we aren’t surprised to see perennial contenders Beyoncé, Billie Eilish and Taylor Swift up for Album of the Year, we are quite shocked to see André 3000’s “New Blue Sun” in the mix. It’s not that we don’t think his flute album is worthy, we just didn’t think Grammy voters would recognize it. After all the flack he took for not releasing a rap record, we’re genuinely happy to see him rewarded for doing his art, his way.

In fact, the OutKast legend wasn’t the only delightful surprise of the nominations, as Brandy and Monica have once again received a nod for their R&B classic “The Boy Is Mine.” This time it comes in the Pop Duo/Group Performance category, courtesy of Ariana Grande’s new remix. If we’re lucky, this could lead to one of those amazing Grammy moments where we get to see Brandy and Monica on stage together again.

As excited as we are about the nominees, major award shows never come without snubs. We were shocked when the Recording Academy decided to move Tyla to the pop category, making her chances at a nomination more difficult. And it turns out, fans were right, as she didn’t get nominated in any of the pop categories.

It’s also a little surprising to see Sexyy Red shut out for Best New Artist, as analysts thought she was an underdog possibility to get nominated. However, it’s not all bad news, as country breakout Shaboozey is one of the frontrunners for Best New Artist.

Over in Best Comedy Album, we’re not surprised to see frequent nominees Trevor Noah and Dave Chapelle represented, but we were really pulling for Marlon Wayans to get a nod for his deeply personal “Good Grief.” Guess he couldn’t break through to get past whatever crazy nonsense Ricky Gervais is joking about.

As the awards approach, we’ll have time to explore some of these categories in more detail, but as always, we’re rooting for everyone Black.

The 67th Grammy Awards air live Sunday, Feb. 2 at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT on CBS and Paramount+ with SHOWTIME.
