Sri Lanka's Kamindu Mendis scores 1000 Test runs as quickly as Don Bradman: Stats

Sri Lanka's Kamindu Mendis continued his Bradman-esque run in Test cricket. The 25-year-old batter became the third fastest batter in the history of Test cricket to complete 1000 runs. Kamindu achieved the feat in his 13th innings, equalling legendary Don Bradman in the list of batters with the fewest innings to achieve the 1000-run milestone in the traditional format.

Kamindu Mendis achieved the feat when he went past 178 on Day 2 of the second Test between Sri Lanka and New Zealand in Galle. Kamindu was unbeaten on 182 when Sri Lanka declared their first innings on 602 for 5. New Zealand slipped to 22 for 2 at Stumps after early strikes from Asitha Fernando and Prabath Jayasuriya.

Kamindu Mendis looked a bit disappointed at the declaration call as he was just 18 runs away from his maiden Test hundred. Kamindu had completed his fifth Test hundred in eight matches as the Sri Lankan batter continued to flaunt his thirst for scoring big in red-ball cricket. Kamindu broke the record for most Tests (8) with at least a fifty-plus score at the start of his career when he went past the fifty-run mark on Thursday in the Galle Test.

Former Sri Lanka captain Kumar Sangakkara echoed the emotions of millions of cricket fans, marvelling at the way Kamindu has started his Test career.

13: Kamindu Mendis went past 1000 runs in Test cricket in 13 innings, equalling Don Bradman's feat. Herbert Sutcliffe and Everton Weeks (12) went past the landmark in fewer innings in Test cricket.

1: Kamindu Mendis broke Vinod Kambli's record for the fastest Asian batter to complete 1000 runs. Kambli took 14 innings to get past the landmark for India.

8: Kamindu Mendis became the first batter in Test cricket history to hit a fifty-plus score in each of his first eight Test matches. He is only the second Sri Lankan to hit fifty-plus scores in eight successive Tests. Kumar Sangakkara hit fifty-plus scores in nine successive Tests in 2014.

8: Kamindu Mendis has got to the 1000-run landmark in 8 Tests. Only Don Bradman got there in fewer Tests - 7.

91.27: Kamindu Mendis's Test average jumped from 74.72 to 91.27 after his unbeaten 182 in the second Test vs New Zealand. He has the second-best average for batters with minimum 1000 runs in Test cricket after Don Bradman's 99.94.

5: Kamindu Mendis is the first man to score five Test hundreds in 2024. He went past Joe Root's tally of four.

Sri Lanka have given themselves a wonderful platform to make it 3 in 3 in Test cricket. After winning a Test in the Oval in London against England, Sri Lanka outclassed New Zealand in the first Test in Galle last week.

Aparrt from Kamindu, Dinesh Chandimal and Kusal Mendis hit hundreds. Chandimal, batting at No. 3, hit 116 while Kusal was unbeaten on 106 for Sri Lanka. Angelo Mathews chipped in with 88 in the first innings.
