PM internship scheme surpasses 1.55 lakh registrations within days of launch

Over 1.55 lakh candidates have registered for the Prime Minister Internship Scheme, surpassing the initial target of 1.25 lakh applicants, according to sources on Sunday. The registration portal, which opened at 5 pm on October 12, had recorded 1,55,109 applicants by Sunday.

The scheme is available to individuals aged 21–24 years and is being run by the Ministry of Corporate Affairs through the portal ‘www.pminternship.mca.gov.in’. Internships under the scheme are set to begin on December 2.

Selected interns will receive a monthly stipend of Rs 5,000 for a year, along with a one-time grant of Rs 6,000.

On Saturday, the ministry announced that the portal had added over 80,000 internship opportunities across 24 sectors, including energy, automotive, and hospitality. It highlighted features like Aadhaar-based registration and bio-data generation to streamline access to internships.

The pilot phase of the scheme, with an estimated cost of Rs 800 crore, was introduced by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in the 2024 Union Budget. It aims to provide young individuals with internships in India's top 500 companies for 12 months.
