Sporting CP's Ruben Amorim will become Manchester United's next coach after the two clubs reached an agreement.
The Red Devils fired Erik ten Hag earlier in the week after a poor start to the season.
Ruud van Nistelrooy will be in charge in an interim capacity until later in the month when Amorim leaves Sporting.
The Red Devils will pay €10 million to buy him out of his contract. At 39, Amorim will become one of the youngest coaches in the league, per The Athletic.
The Portuguese coach will have plenty of work to do. The team has won four games all season and are 14th in the Premier League.
He will assess the squad, and some will become favourites, and others will be dropped. here are the main winners and losers when the Amorim era begins, per iNews.
Winners
Manuel Ugarte
The Uruguayan midfielder arrives from Paris Saint-Germain in the summer but has yet to justify his price tag. He has shown his talent in glimpses, but Amorim presents him with a golden opportunity.
The Sporting boss brought him to Sporting and transformed him into a top defensive midfielder. Therefore, Ugarte will likely be a starter under Amorim and help the coach implement his ideas on the team quickly.
Marcus Rashford
Rashford was incredible in Ten Hag's first season at the club, but he has regressed significantly especially last season. The England star missed out on Euro 2024 and has lost his place in the England squad.
With Amorim's 3-4-3 or 3-4-2-1 formations, Rashford could thrive as an inside forward like Pedro Goncalves does for Sporting.
Rasmus Hojlund
Amorim turned Viktor Gyokeres into a goal scoring machine. Hojlund has struggled with consistency at Man United but Amorim could galvanize the Danish forward. The former Atalanta star has scored 18 goals in 51 matches at the club, per Transfermarkt.
Losers
Bruno Fernandes
The Portuguese international has been an ever-present figure at Old Trafford since his arrival from Sporting in January 2020. He rarely gets injured and is arguably the team's most creative player.
Amorim's formation could see Fernandes struggle to make the team. For Fernandes, this could be a case of being in the right place at the wrong time.
Casemiro
The Brazilian is one of the highest-paid players at the club. He's produced some forgettable performances, but Amorim will likely go with his former players, Ugarte and Mainoo.
The Real Madrid legend will likely drop to the bench, and given his age, there's a chance he could leave at the end of the season.
Van Nistelrooy on Erik ten Hag
Ruud van Nistelrooy returned to Man United as part of Ten Hag's backroom staff in the summer.
The Dutchman thanked ten Hag for giving him the opportunity at Man United, adding that he is sad he has left the role. He said he was happy to lead the club as a caretaker coach for the club he loves, as Legit.ng reported earlier.
