Enhanced security protocols are now in place at various crowded locations, including religious sites. “We have received directives to conduct regular security drills at locations with large congregations, including religious institutions,” a senior police officer said. The heightened security measures are a precautionary step to protect the citizens and safeguard critical infrastructure, he added. The increased vigilance comes as the city gears up for upcoming festivals like Durga Puja, Dussehra, and Diwali, along with the anticipated state assembly elections in November.

Assembly elections update: Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Rajiv Kumar has directed a crackdown on fake news as part of the Election Commission’s review of poll preparedness in Maharashtra. During a two-day visit, the CEC met with various officials, including district electoral officers (DEOs) and police superintendents, to discuss the management of polling stations and voter convenience. He stressed the importance of ensuring adequate facilities at polling locations, such as benches for waiting voters, drinking water, and proper signage. The term of the current Maharashtra assembly concludes on November 26, with elections expected to be announced in the coming month.

How is the weather today? The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a ‘yellow alert’ for the city on Saturday. Meanwhile, in the Raigad and Palghar districts, the weather dept has sounded an orange alert (heavy to very heavy rain). Independent meteorologists have also warned of very heavy rainfall in South Mumbai. A ‘yellow’ alert is in place for several districts, including Thane, Pune, and Satara predicting thunderstorms and moderate rain for the day.

Mumbai News Live Updates: Two men held with country-made pistols, bullets in Mumbai

Two persons have been arrested for alleged possession of country-made pistols and bullets in suburban Powai here, police said on Saturday.

Acting on a tip-off, a crime branch team on Friday laid a trap and apprehended the duo who had arrived in the area allegedly to deliver the weapons, an official said.

The accused, Sachin Fulchand Kishwah (18) and Amarkumar Badshah Nai (23), hail from Katni in neighbouring Madhya Pradesh, he said.

The team seized two country-made pistols, four bullets and two mobile phones from the duo, the official said, adding that a case has been registered under the Arms Act.

Expressing his concerns over the urban voter apathy, CEC Rajiv Kumar said efforts are being made to ensure maximum polling in the ensuing Maharashtra assembly elections.

Addressing a press conference in Mumbai, Kumar singled out areas like Colaba and Kalyan in and around Mumbai which have recorded among the lowest voter turnout in the Lok Sabha polls held this year.

He also said that the voters have the right to know if the candidates have any criminal background. The political parties should inform the citizens of the same, he added.

The election commission, which is in Mumbai to review poll preparedness in Maharashtra, following assembly elections that are due later this year, CEC Rajiv Kumar issued certain directives.

Here's what he said:

📌 We met all stakeholders including political parties and officials ahead of Maharashtra assembly elections.

📌 There will be 1,00,186 polling booths in Maharashtra assembly elections. The CEC also assured minimum facilities at all booths, such as benches for voters in queue, drinking water and parking of vehicles for booths located in congested areas.

📌 It is the right of voters to know if any candidate has criminal background; parties should also inform.

📌 The CEC also made clear that fake news on social media will not be tolerated and directed the officials to ensure swift response against the menace.

📌 Emphasising the importance of voting, he also said that there are some urban centres in Maharashtra which have been recording lowest voting percentage in the country.

Mumbai News Live Updates: Woman booked for cheating people of Rs 82.28 lakh in Navi Mumbai

The Navi Mumbai police have registered a case against the wife of a policeman for allegedly cheating people of Rs 82.28 lakh by luring them to invest in schemes, an official said on Saturday.

Based on a complaint by one of the investors, a first information report (FIR) was registered against the 40-year-old accused on Thursday, assistant inspector Mahendra Aher of the CBD police station said.

The accused, the wife of a police havildar, accepted money from people promising them good returns in small schemes, he said.

The woman allegedly collected Rs 82.28 lakh from at least 22 persons since 2019 and later failed to return their money, the official said.

The complaint also states that the woman threatened the investors seeking a refund and verbally abused them, he said.

The count of the number of people defrauded may go up during the investigation, and the amount involved may increase, the official said.

A senior police officer confirmed the development and said a summon has been issued to Hemrajani as part of the preliminary inquiry (PE) opened in the matter by the agency.

The band will perform at DY Patil Sports Stadium in Navi Mumbai, Maharashtra, on January 18, 19, and 21, 2025. The ticket frenzy for concert tickets caused a stir on social media as several fans failed to secure tickets after waiting in a long virtual queue on BookMyShow.
