Virgil van Dijk disagrees with Darwin Nunez's three-word Mo Salah message after Liverpool goal

by · Irish Mirror

Virgil van Dijk told Darwin Nunez "we need more" as the Liverpool frontman tried to credit Mohamed Salah after his match winner on Wednesday night.

The Uruguayan scored the only goal of the game in Germany as the Reds saw off RB Leipzig. Nunez had only scored the once prior to notching in the Champions League as he continues to struggle in front of goal.

His strike came from no more than a yard out as he tapped home Salah's header, which looked to be heading in anyway. The Egyptian, normally renowned for his desire to add to his goal tally, warmly received his team-mate after he nicked in to take his goal.

Nunez was more than happy to give the credit to his team-mate, telling Van Dijk: "No, it's Mo." But Van Dijk was having none of it. The striker attempted to praise Salah but the Dutch defender simply came up to the forward, slapping his chest and demanded more.

The ex-Benfica man is now into his third season at Anfield with the jury still out. His general play has long been praised but his goal return has been cited as an issue. Nunez's finishing remains his major issue and he's copped criticism for missing big chances in significant games.

He has struggled to keep pace with his attacking colleagues despite doubling his tally in Germany. Salah leads Liverpool's goalscoring charts with Diogo Jota and Luis Diaz also beginning the campaign well.

Arne Slot continued his stellar start as manager, setting a club record by winning his first six away games. He's won 11 out of 12 matches and was pleased to see his forward score - but also hailed his all round game.

Virgil van Dijk demanded more from his striker

He said: "I'm always happy when we score a goal and I'm not that much into it who scores it. It is always good to see all of our players scoring goals and I think in the lead-up to the goal, Cody [Gakpo] and Mo [Salah] were just as important in the goal as Darwin was.

"What I liked from Darwin was that he was also strong, comfortable on the ball, kept the ball a lot, fighting if he had to defend, so he made it a really difficult game for the two centre-backs of Leipzig. And then for him scoring, I think that is always nice for a striker to be on the scoresheet."
