Roy Keane thinks England have picked up a world class manager in Thomas Tuchel, if the Irishman's previous comments are anything to go by.

Tuchel is the first ever German to take charge of the Three Lions, just over three years after he won the Champions League with Chelsea. Having won the big eared European trophy within his first six months at the Blues, there were huge expectations on the former Bayern Munich manager's shoulders at Stamford Bridge.

In his second campaign, there were mixed reviews about how his Chelsea side fared, particularly after they forked out £97million on signing Romelu Lukaku from Inter Milan. Despite the criticism he received, the former Manchester United captain was impressed with Tuchel. He made his feelings about the ex-Borussia Dortmund manager clear at the end of the 2021-22 season.

When asked about Tuchel, Keane told Sky Bet: "He is a top quality manager," after he guided the Blues to a third place finish in the Premier League. He also added: "There has obviously been loads of uncertainty over the club the last few months, that has been sorted out now obviously with the new ownership coming in.

"I'm pretty sure again he [Tuchel] will be able to bring some players in. He is a top-quality manager, he has dealt with a lot of issues over the last few months. Ultimately it was a disappointing end to the season for them."

Tuchel attracted plenty of praise for the way he handled the the final months of Roman Abramovich's ownership of Chelsea. He was effectively the spokesperson for the club after Abramovich had to cease control following Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

Despite spending a then Premier League record £255.3m in the following summer transfer window under the new ownership, Tuchel was shockingly sacked a matter of weeks into the new season.

He would go on to join Bayern Munich, where he won the Bundesliga in his first campaign, before finishing behind Xabi Alonso's unbeaten Bayer Leverkusen side and the impressive VFB Stuttgart in his second campaign. While their league performances were disappointing, he still reached the Champions League semi-finals, where his side were knocked out in controversial fashion by eventual winners Real Madrid.

Tuchel had been without a job since the end of last season. He had been linked with a move to Manchester United, but the Football Association were the ones who were able to convince him to sign.

When his move to England was confirmed, Tuchel said: “I am very proud to have been given the honour of leading the England team. I have long felt a personal connection to the game in this country, and it has given me some incredible moments already.

"To have the chance to represent England is a huge privilege, and the opportunity to work with this special and talented group of players is very exciting."
