Harry Kane and Bayern Munich humbled by Barcelona as ex-Leeds star Raphinha hits hat-trick

by · Irish Mirror

England captain Harry Kane was left humiliated as Bayern Munich were thrashed 4-1 by Barcelona in the Champions League.

Former Leeds United winger Raphinha scored a sublime hat-trick as Barca continued their formidable start to the season and made a statement against Bayern. Vincent Kompany's side have now suffered back-to-back defeats in Europe, having also lost to Aston Villa last month.

Bayern were behind with less than two minutes on the clock, as Barca captain Raphinha burst away and exploited their high line before rounding Manuel Neuer. Nine minutes later, England skipper Kane thought he'd responded with a header that was ultimately chalked offside.

Kane did get on the scoresheet shortly after, though, ombining with Serge Gnabry to draw Bayern level. That was as good as it got for the German giants, as Robert Lewandowski came back to haunt his and manager Hansi Flick's old club. The 36-year-old striker made it 2-1 after a contentious assist from Fermin Lopez, who looked to have fouled Bayern defender Kim Min-jae in the build-up.

As half-time loomed, Raphinha scored Barcelona's third of the night with a belting solo effort. Within 10 minutes of the restart it was 4-1, as the Brazilian beautifully controlled Lamine Yamal's pass on his chest and gave Neuer no chance.

Raphinha's third strike marked his ninth goal of the season, having been handed the captain's armband by Flick in the absence of first-choice goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen. Raphinha, two years on from his £55million move from Leeds, received a standing ovation when he subbed off in the 76th minute, with the first El Clasico of the season against Real Madrid certainly in mind.

Barcelona are currently top of La Liga, three points ahead of Madrid after taking 27 from a possible 30 this season. They've now also won two of their three Champions League games under Flick.

Wednesday's fixture promised to be a classic in this new-look format, as the five-time winners hosted the six-time kings of Europe. Bayern's 8-2 crushing of Barcelona in 2020, for which Flick and Lewandowski were on the other side, was still fresh in the memory for the home crowd at the city's Olympic stadium.

But Raphinha's brilliance on his 100th appearance for Barca helped them exercise some demons, perfectly setting up their trip to the Bernabeu on Saturday. "We played a very good game. We achieved our second victory in the Champions League," he said post-match. "We are already thinking about El Clasico. It will be a brilliant match. It's one of the best matches in the world."

A delighted Flick added: "We think the game was great. After the first goal, we had 10-15 minutes where it was difficult for us. In the end, it's good to see the team recover. We are a young team and it's important to see that. We have a lot more potential. We try to do that in every game and improve the way we play, that's our goal."
