APIA, SAMOA — A Caribbean leader will seek a “frank” conversation with U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer about reparatory justice for the slave trade.

Starmer arrived Thursday at the biennial Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Samoa, telling journalists he wanted to be “facing forward” on issues such as climate change instead of having “very, very long, endless discussions about reparations.”

But Philip Davis, the prime minister of the Bahamas and a prominent advocate for reparations, told POLITICO: “I don’t want to comment on his views about looking forward or on the past, but I think knowing what the past is should inform your decision-making towards the future.
