Strictly Come Dancing's Chris McCausland admits wife 'brings chaos' in personal insight

Comedian Chris McCausland, who is currently competing on this year's series of Strictly Come Dancing, has shared a rare insight into his marriage with wife Patricia

Strictly Come Dancing's Chris McCausland, who is tends to keep his private life out of the spotlight, has described his wife as the "very opposite" of him, bringing a sense of "chaos" to their home.

The 47-year-old was an up-and-coming comedian at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2005 when he met his future wife, Patricia. He says she was filming a documentary on the festival at the time.

This, Chris says, gave the pair time to bond. The former Cbeebies star, who lost his sight having been born with a genetic condition called retinitis pigmentosa (RP), says the pair "had fun" while making the documentary.

The couple now share 10-year-old daughter Sophie together. Liverpool-born Chris, however, believes the couple are "very opposite" as he brings calmness to their relationship, while Brazilian Patricia brings "chaos".

Speaking on Gyles Brandreth's Rosebud podcast earlier this year, Chris shared in a rare insight: "We spent a lot of time together when the camera wasn't running, socialising, going out and doing things, and we just had a lot of fun. We were very opposite, she comes across as very British but she's Brazilian, she came across when she was five or six."

"Her life is chaos in the way that Brazilian people are chaos. It's a natural attribute of their being that they are very proud of - they bring chaos to any room.

"The number of times she'll be talking in Portuguese to her mum and then I'll say to her, 'are you okay? What happened there?' and she'll say, 'we were just..' but it sounds like they had the most horrific argument and they're just talking about what they're going to do that day.

"Full of energy, took me out of my comfort zone, and I think me to her, I made her laugh and was almost this calming presence in her life that she was attracted to."

Chris was employed at a call centre when he decided to quit and pursue stand-up comedy full-time. He spoke about the "adrenaline surge" from performing, which led to him taking to the stage "four or five times" a week.

He added: "I gave up the day job, I gave up the call centre two years in, which is really quite quick. I just took a leap, really, and I got a credit card lined up in case I needed it, and I never needed it, thank god.

"I ended up loving it so much, I enjoyed the people I met from all walks of life doing comedy, and although the call centre was one of the best decisions I've ever made in my life, the work itself was a little bit mind-numbing. And so having this adrenaline, this surge to look forward to in an evening, I ended up gigging four to five nights a week."

Chris will be heading into week three of Strictly Come Dancing tonight. Last week, partnered with Australian dancer Dianne Buswell, he scored 52 points with a foxtrot to Be Young, Be Foolish, Be Happy by The Tams.

Strictly Come Dancing airs on BBC One at 6.25pm.
