Met Eireann has updated a nationwide weather warning ahead of Storm Ashley's arrival on Sunday.

The first storm of the season will bring wild and windy weather to Ireland this weekend and the national forecaster has issued two warnings ahead of the brutal conditions.

A Status Orange wind warning has been issued for Galway and Mayo, as Met Eireann says: "Storm Ashley will bring very strong and gusty south to southwest winds, coupled with high spring tides."

Impacts include coastal flooding, large coastal waves, loose objects displaced and fallen trees. People in these areas should also be on alert for very difficult travelling conditions, dangerous conditions at sea, damage to power lines, power outages and damage to already weakened structures.

The weather alert will come into effect at 12pm on Sunday October 20 and will remain valid until 9pm that evening.

A separate Status Yellow wind warning has been issued for the entirety of Ireland, which will now be in place between 6am on Sunday morning and midnight on Monday October 21 in a new update.

Met Eireann lists coastal flooding, large coastal waves, some fallen trees and branches, difficult travelling conditions with debris and loose objects displaced as possible effects of Storm Ashley.

It's not all bad news this weekend thankfully, as tomorrow (Saturday October 19) is expected to be dry and bright during the day before rain moves across the country during the evening.

The forecast on Met.ie says: "Much of the day on Saturday will be dry and bright with sunny spells and just a few passing showers. However, cloud will build from the south through the evening with rain developing in the southwest after nightfall. Highest temperatures of 12 to 15 degrees in moderate southwest winds. There is the continuing possibility of coastal flooding due to very high tides.

"Heavy rain will extend nationwide on Saturday night and strong southeast winds will develop with gales and strong gales along coasts. Lowest temperatures of 9 to 13 degrees."
