Coronation Street fans have been left shocked by Gemma Winter's sudden decision to leave Weatherfield.

Actress Dolly-Rose Campbell has played the loveable character of Gemma since 2014 and has tackled some of the soap's most dramatic storylines.

She has dealt with post-natal depression following the birth of her and husband Chesney's quadruplets Aled, Bryn, Carys and Lilo and muddled her way through financial stress as the couple had to take on extra jobs to keep their family afloat.

In recent months, Gemma has faced serious heartbreak following the death of her twin brother Paul.

The builder, played by Peter Ash, left viewers in tears earlier this year when he died from motor neurone disease.

Gemma is still struggling with Paul's passing, sparking concern amongst her loved ones.

In Monday's trip to the cobbles, a grief-stricken Gemma returned to work at her job at The Rovers Return, despite Chesney telling her that it was too soon.

As expected, she became overwhelmed and retreated to the back of the pub, away from customers. Her brother Kit consoled her and suggested she needed a break from everything, offering her the chance to stay in one of his pals cottages in the Lake District.

Gemma agreed she could do with the getaway following a stressful few months, as Chesney encouraged his wife to take some time out for herself.

Corrie fans were disappointed to see Gemma taking a break from the soap and took to social media to share their sadness.

"Hope she comes back soon," wrote one viewer on Facebook as another added: "She is playing her character so well and going through hell."

"Can't blame her for needing a breather to find herself again," a third person said while a fourth remarked: "Seems a bit sudden".

Back in Weatherfield, Chesney could soon find himself in hot water. He is already struggling to balance his work at Prima Doner with looking after the kids, but Kirk unknowingly serving a health inspector while covering for his pal at the kebab shop could spell further bad news for him.

Coronation Street airs Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays on ITV and Virgin Media One.
