Marks and Spencer issues 'do not eat' warning for lunch product that 'may contain metal'

Shoppers are advised to check their fridges for the product and return it to their nearest store for a refund due to the safety risk

Marks & Spencer has warned shoppers to check their fridges for a popular lunch product that has been recalled because it may be unsafe to eat.

The retailer and supermarket has pulled its M&S Smooth Butternut Squash Soup from sale because it may contain small pieces of metal. The Food Standards Agency (FSA) has issued an alert warning customers of the risk, advising anyone who has purchased the affected product not to eat it.

Instead, they can return it to their nearest store to receive a full refund, and can contact M&S customer services on 03330148555 for more information. Packs of the soup with a use by date of October 6, 2024 are the only ones affected, with M&S displaying notices in all stores informing shoppers of the recall.

The notice reads: "Customer safety is of paramount importance to Marks & Spencer, and we take all issued regarding the production of our foods extremely seriously. Marks & Spencer is recalling its Smooth Butternut Squash Soup for the potential presence of small traces of metal in a small number of packs."

Apologising to customers for any inconvenience caused, the retailer adds: "Please do not consume this product. Any customers in possession of this product can return it to their nearest store where a full refund will be given."

In a separate recall, the FSA has issued a series of alerts over dozens of products that have been withdrawn from sale across several brands and retailers due to a peanut allergy risk. The agency said it is urgently working with Local Authorities and individual businesses to identify which items may be affected.

The FSA has advised people who have a peanut allergy to avoid consuming foods that contain or may contain mustard, mustard powder or mustard flour as part of the recall. Yesterday (Tuesday, October 1), 52 more products were added to the recall list, including mayonnaise, seasonings and sauces - read the full list here.
