Alan Shearer was relieved when he found out that his daughters weren't dating footballers.

The Newcastle United striker, best known for his record-breaking 260 Premier League goals and punditry on Match of the Day, is also a dedicated family man off the pitch.

Shearer met his wife, Lainya, in the early stages of his career while playing for Southampton in 1988, and they tied the knot three years later. Fast-forward to 2024, and the couple have been happily married for 33 years and have three children together: Hollie, Chloe, and Will, who are all now grown up.

It's not uncommon for fathers to fret about the day their cherished daughter brings home a boyfriend to meet the parents, and Shearer was likely no different. Luckily for the 54-year-old, both Hollie and Chloe have found love with rugby union players instead of footballing stars.

Hollie, a gifted singer-songwriter, has been in a relationship with Stade Francais and England rugby union star Joe Marchant since 2022 - the pair reside in Paris to accommodate for the centre's career. Shortly after Hollie made her relationship public, Shearer was quick to share his thoughts on her choice of partner, reports the Mirror.

When queried about Marchant on social media, Shearer couldn't resist showing off his wit and joked: "I'm just glad it's not a footballer." The comment suggests he's quite aware of the notorious lifestyle that comes with high-level football, something he's likely observed among past team-mates and emerging talents over the years.

Relationship goals don't get much clearer than the love shown between Hollie and rugby beau Marchant. Shearer's daughter recently took to social media to share a heartfelt birthday message for Marchant, complete with a selection of lovely pictures showing the couple all dressed up and gazing into each other's eyes.

The pair also don't shy away from documenting their idyllic getaways either, with snaps of sun-kissed holidays splashed across their pages. Making waves in the rugby scene, Marchant kicked off his professional journey with Worthing back in 2014, swiftly moving to Harlequins the year after.

Micky Young and Chloe

His commitment to the London club is evidenced by an impressive record of 317 points over 152 matches from 2015 to 2023 before he switched alliances to Parisian side Stade Francais last year. Playing out of Paris these days, Marchant isn't just making news on the domestic front - he's also worn the England jersey 27 times internationally.

And love for rugby players seems to run in the family, as Shearer's other daughter, Chloe, is also romantically linked to Micky Young, a former scrum-half for England and Newcastle Falcons. However, Chloe has opted to share less about her personal life on Instagram, with Young not featuring on her feed since June.

Born in Hartlepool, Young began his professional career with Newcastle Falcons in 2008, scoring 50 points in 79 appearances before moving to Leicester Tigers in 2011. He had a two-year stint at Bath between 2013 and 2015 before returning to the Falcons, where he remained loyal for eight years. He left the north east at the end of the 2022/23 Premiership season to play for Toulon as a World Cup Joker, before moving to Gloucester as injury cover.
