Liam Payne's One Direction bandmates have released a joint statement following the star's death at the age of 31.

A preliminary autopsy into the singer's death revealed he died from "multiple traumas" that caused "internal and external bleeding", after falling from a hotel balcony in Buenos Aires on Wednesday.

Liam's former bandmates Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson and Zayn Malik have released a joint statement on Thursday following his death.

In the statement, signed "Louis, Zayn, Niall and Harry", they said: "We’re completely devastated by the news of Liam’s passing.

"In time, and when everyone is able to, there will be more to say. But for now, we will take some time to grieve and process the loss of our brother, who we loved dearly.

"The memories we shared with him will be treasured forever. For now, our thoughts are with his family, his friends, and the fans who loved him alongside us.

"We will miss him terribly.

"We love you Liam."

One Direction was formed in 2010 after the five member individually auditioned for The X Factor.

After becoming one of the biggest pop groups in the world, with five albums and four world tours, they went on indefinite hiatus in 2016.
