People are just discovering McDonald's McFlurry spoon has a hidden feature

The McDonald's McFlurry has been a fast food favourite for decades, but it seems many fans of the frozen dessert are only just realising a key aspect of the spoon that comes with it

Since its introduction in 1998, McDonald's McFlurry has cemented its status as a fan favourite on the fast food chain's menu. Over time, the frozen treat has undergone various changes in packaging and has featured several limited edition collaborations with major confectionery brands such as Cadbury, Nestle, and Mars.

But what often goes unnoticed is the distinctive plastic spoon that comes with every McFlurry. Confusion surrounding the purpose of the spoon was evident in a recent Instagram post, which showed a picture of the McFlurry and its spoon, prompting the caption: "Is this a straw or some kind of eating device? " This curiosity wasn't left hanging for long; when shared on X, previously known as Twitter, aficionados of fast food were quick to clear the air.

A user on X explained, "It's quite literally a drill bit spoon," highlighting the functional design which allows the spoon to mix the dessert thoroughly when attached to a machine via the hole—a clever approach that streamlines both mixing and reduces waste. Another individual endorsed this insight, saying, "We all wondered thus at some point. Its cool design because the spoon becomes the mixer as well."

While many remained adamant that it was simply a spoon—or possibly a hybrid of a spoon and straw—there were those eager to confirm its unique purpose as a key part of the McFlurry stirring mechanism.

One individual explained the function of a particular utensil, noting: "Spoon made for use as the blender attachment used for mixing," and elaborated on its efficiency by adding, "Saves on time, labour steps, and machine cost. It is not in fact designed to be used as a straw.", reports the Mirror.

Another concurred, providing more insight: "If you've ever seen them make one that thing clicks onto the machine and that's how they blend stuff into the ice cream. It's like that to attach to the spindle piece."

There have been changes on the McDonald's UK menu last month as the Milkybar Raspberry Ripple and Munchies Cookie Dough McFlurry, along with the Mini McFlurry options, were discontinued. However, visitors have found new delights with the introduction of the Galaxy Chocolate McFlurry and Twix Chocolate McFlurry, priced at £2.19 and £1.59 for the full and mini sizes respectively.

These new additions are tag-teamed with the enduring favourites - Maltesers, Oreo and Smarties - which remain more pocket-friendly at £1.69 and £1.19.
