Exact date and places where forecasters say snow will fall in the UK

Temperatures across the UK are expected to take a dramatic tumble in the forthcoming 10 days, possibly dropping by as much as 16C, leading to speculation of snowfall in certain areas. The mercury is forecasted to fall below freezing by Saturday 2 November, as high pressure gives way.

James Madden from Exacta Weather has indicated that "wintry weather" will initially target northern regions towards the end of this week.

He noted: "An additional area of low pressure and rather unsettled feature then looks to interfere with this regime from in and around Thursday or Friday, and this could bring more in the way of some heavy showers and potentially gusty to strong winds, particularly across parts of Scotland and Ireland and in western parts of the UK once again to begin with.

Additionally, this will also pave the way for some much cooler to even colder conditions for the time of the year from the north as we head into next weekend, and this should also happen to coincide with some further stormy conditions in this period to bring some wintry weather across the far north and Scotland at the very least during next weekend and early next week (around October 27/28)."

And Northumberland is listed as one of the places snow can be expected.

After temperatures reached a height of 18.3C in Santon Downham, Suffolk, on Wednesday, and even scaled to 16C in the Scottish Highlands, meteorologists now suggest that 0C could be expected around Saturday 2 November.

Forecasters say snow will fall in these areas

  • Scottish Highlands
  • Midlothian
  • Scottish Borders
  • Lake District

However, the Met Office's latest long-range forecast does not predict snow, but instead expects a "brisk" feel, frost, and fog, reports the Mirror.

Their forecast for October 26 to November 4 states: "Temperatures likely closer to average than of late with an often brisk westerly flow bringing systems in from the Atlantic. Some longer spells of rain may spread erratically southeastwards across parts of the UK at the start of the weekend, especially in the north and perhaps accompanied by windy conditions, but with a trend for high pressure to build close to the UK later in the weekend and beyond into early November."

The Met Office adds that this will lead to longer dry spells, increased chances of frost and fog, and breezy conditions in the northwest with occasional rain. On Sunday, central and eastern areas will be dry with bright spells, while the north and west will be cloudier with strong winds and patchy rain, turning heavy in the far west later.
