Three people were taken to hospital after a taxi ploughed into a group of shoppers in a horror incident on one of Scotland’s busiest streets.

The black cab, which had come from Gordon Street outside Glasgow Central station, appeared to mount the pavement before hitting four pedestrians.

Three people were injured and taken to hospital, while a fourth person walked from the scene after escaping without injury.

It is understood that the group were waiting to cross the road when the taxi lost control and struck them at around 2pm near the window of the Tesco Express adjacent to Union Street.

An eyewitness who saw the scene unfold told us that one woman appeared to have a ‘head injury’ with ‘quite a lot of blood’ visible.

The taxi driver was also spotted in the front of the car at around 2.30pm while the pedestrians were treated by emergency service workers on the ground.

Another witness said: ‘It looked like the driver possibly ran the woman into the window. It didn’t look good.

Police Scotland said in a statement: ‘At around 1.50pm, we attended a report of a crash involving a taxi and three pedestrians on Union Street, at the junction with Gordon Street in Glasgow City Centre.
