Strictly's Wynne Evans and Katya Jones put on a united front

Strictly Come Dancing stars Wynne Evans and Katya Jones were in high spirits as they headed home from training on Monday.

The pair have put on a united front after being embroiled in controversy over their 'wandering hand incident.'

Wynne, 52, beamed as he and Katya, 42,  departed another day of rehearsals, after facing complaints that they were 'overmarked' by the judges for their Quickstep last week.

The routine earned the duo an impressive 33 out of 40, with Motsi Mabuse and Shirley Ballas awarding them nines. 

However fans were left unimpressed by the score, as they claimed Wynne and Katya had been over marked. 

As she and Wynne departed rehearsals together, Katya layered a cosy black jacket over her red dress, while the opera star cut a casual figure in a grey shirt and jeans.

It comes after reports that BBC bosses gave the duo an extra chaperone after his 'wandering hand' incident.  

The dance partners have spent the week defending their awkward exchange during Saturday night's live show.

Viewers spotted the toe-curling moment Katya moved Wynne's hand away from her waist and snubbed his attempt at a high-five with her.

Now The Sun reports that they had extra eyes on them and that the whole crew and staff were asked to be vigilant because of the incident while the next episode was filmed.

A source said: 'Instead of just one, they had a chaperone each and the whole crew were generally on high alert.

'It was considered a way to prevent any other foolish jokes but also protect Katya if Wynne's waist-grab wasn't the joke they insist it was and was indeed a grope.

'Either way, bosses felt like it would be prudent to get extra eyes on them to prevent any more misdemeanours.'

The incident caused such concern among BBC top brass, who have spent months firefighting accusations of misconduct on previous series, that a welfare investigation was conducted.

Katya had confirmed that she had not felt uncomfortable and no further action was taken.

However despite this the publication claims that Wynne and Katya 'barely spent any time together off camera' on Saturday.

Katya has defended her celebrity partner, declaring he has been 'portrayed as someone he is not', as the pair insist his 'wandering hand' incident was a silly joke.

On last week's It Takes Two, Wynne admitted he had watched the footage of the incident back and confessed: 'I can see how people may have misinterpreted it.'

But fans are still yet to be convinced and were left cringing on Saturday by Wynne and Katya's 'awkward' return to the dance floor.

The pair performed a quickstep as they attempted to shake off the toe-curling viral moment that saw Katya move Wynne's hand away from her waist and snubbed his attempt at a high-five with her.

Fans were left with a sour taste in their mouths by the couple's VT before they took to the floor, branding it overly 'wholesome' and 'cosy' in a bid to put rumours of their feud to bed.

The clip saw the pair beaming as they climbed a Welsh mountain before Wynne gave Katya a piggyback.

Despite the pair, who were once frontrunners, for the Glitterball Trophy, becoming bookies' favourite to leave the competition next, they scored a respectable 33 out of 40 for their Quickstep.

Ahead of Saturday's show Alex Apati of Ladbrokes said: 'Wynne's chances have taken a huge hit over the last few days, and punters are convinced he'll be in a dangerous position in the leaderboard this weekend... a stark contrast with where he was this time last week.'

Speaking on spin-off show It Takes Two on Monday, Wynne admitted he had watched the footage of the incident back and confessed: 'I can see how people may have misinterpreted it.'

Clinging to his arm, Katya said she 'can't bear' the flack her co-star is getting and was empathetic that there was no wrongdoing.

She said: 'The idea that it made me feel uncomfortable or offended in any way is total nonsense, and those that have doubts, you guys have got it wrong. So hopefully this will be the end of it, and you just keep making me smile.'

She added: 'I can't sit here watching this man being portrayed as someone he's not. In fact, it couldn't be further away from the truth.

'So I have to make this absolutely clear that this whole incident, with the hand and the high five on Saturday night, was an inside joke between Wynne and I. Was it a silly joke? Yes, was it a bad joke? Yes.'
